So it’s been over two years since I have been natural and I don’t regret this journey one bit. In fact, I’m totally in love with rocking my hair because it’s so much healthier now. I do admit that when I first started out, I was super nervous. I was nervous because wearing my natural hair was something that I wasn’t use to. I was guilty of using the harmful chemical relaxers that would give me the benefit of having straight and beautiful hair. In reality, those chemical relaxers were destroying my hair causing it to fall out. I also became addicted to wearing hair weave extensions, which gave me the easy way out from taking care of my hair.

Before I went natural, hair weave extensions were my thing. I would wear them so much that it was tearing out my hair because I wasn’t caring for my natural hair properly as I should have. Hair weaves are definitely okay to wear as a protective style for your natural hair, but it only becomes a problem when you wear it all the time like an everyday accessory. It’s important to allow your natural hair to breathe sometimes giving it that tender loving care.

I can verify that ever since I left those harmful chemical relaxers alone in 2013, I have noticed my hair is much stronger and grows like crazy that I have to be consistent with getting my trims. I still was wearing my hair weave extensions up until early 2015. Around June 2015, I decided to do an important change. I decided to discard my hair weaves for good and embrace my natural hair. The best change ever! My hair is much healthier and is growing out so nice. Every once in a while, I would treat myself to getting a hair weave for maybe like a special event. Overall, I’m not wearing the extensions on a consistent basis like I was.

I decided to begin this journey to embrace my natural hair because I didn’t no longer wanted to hide my hair anymore. I went through a lot of life changes within the past few years and wanted to go for something different to represent the new me. So far I’m loving it! I have learned how to properly take care of my hair the right way.

As a black girl, I have been raised up on using chemical relaxers, extensive heat such as the hot comb and hair products with ingredients that were no good for my hair. It took me a long time to love my hair and educate myself on how to care for it. Long overdue but I can say that I’m finally on board as being a part of the natural hair community. #TeamNaturalHair

  1. So happy that you like your natural hair now! I have such ups and downs with my hair! I used to dye it once a week with all different colours, that usually involved bleach. I haven’t fully dyed it in so long now, and I can’t remember when I last bleached it, and its so much more healthier! I do miss it, but definitely don’t miss how damaged my hair looked all the time! xx

Girl, I hear you. I have considered so many times to go and do a treatment, so that my hair can be straight and shiny but, over time, I decided that I do love my hair a lot more, especially now that it is growing out! So glad that you enjoy your hair now

I admire you so much. My hair is relaxed at the moment, and I am yet to come out of my weave and braid obsession. However, my family says I have hair that Samson would be proud of cause my hairline is in tact and my hair is very thick. The only thing I can say I do differently is that I relax 3 times a year. And I make my own natural deep conditioners. Really enjoyed the post, maybe one day I’ll stop. Not just yet.

Your hair is lovely, I can relate with transitioning to natural, also shared a blogpost on that, my only regret with going natural 3.5years ago is that I didn’t do it earlier enough, but it all works out in the end because back then I didn’t have as much information as I do now.
